MakeAlive
UX Design, Installation, Video

This was a project in two parts — an installation and an app. But the concept for each was the same: making artifacts from the Viking and Middle Ages “come to life” through a series of short films. Each film would tell the story of an artifact’s (possible) former owner: Here, a Viking father and his son, a tavern girl, a rebellious peasant and a monk.

MakeAlive was my Bachelor’s project, part of Mikael Brink Frederiksen’s Master’s; and curator Mikkel Kirkedahl Nielsen’s Ph.D. It was exhibited at Ribe Viking Museum (2015) and Ballerup Library (2018).

How the MakeAlive app worked

Museum visitors downloaded the app in the foyer, and when encountering exhibits bearing the MakeAlive symbol, the app would interact with the exhibit.

The Cinematic Display Case

The installation (the “Cinematic Display Case”) utilized the 150 year old theatrical projection technique Pepper’s Ghost. Implementing the technique into a traditional display case, we wanted to make the exhibited artifacts merge seamlessly with the short film.

Setup at Ballerup Library

In fall 2018, the short films were re-used for a Medieval-themed exhibition at Ballerup Library.
